Fennek 4x4 Lightly Armored Wheeled Vehicle
The FENNEK vehicle family is the answer to various requirement profiles and has proven its worth time after time with over 600 combat-ready vehicles in the German and Dutch Army – and also currently, being deployed in Afghanistan. The three-man crew - driver, commander and radio operator/observer - can operate autonomously for up to five days. Equipment, operating materials, drinking water and food are carried in the vehicle. Air transportable in the C130, the FENNEK can be moved quickly and easily, even to distant areas of deployment.
Mobility With a total gross weight of up to 12 tons the FENNEK copes easily with gradients of over 60% and cross slopes greater than 35%. It has a turning radius of 13 meters and a water fording capability of up to one meter. An automatic tire pressure control system allows the vehicle to adapt perfectly to the terrain conditions. Its powerful engine is complemented by a selectable all-wheel-drive, a fully automatic transmission and a transfer case. The H-drive train allow the low height and low center of gravity of the vehicle, which in turn guarantee the high mobility in heavy terrain, whilst the use of state of the art engine technology enables a range of almost 1 000 kilometers.
Being the first vehicle of the FENNEK family, the Artillery Observer has already proven its mission performance. Since 2004 it has been deployed with great success with the Bundeswehr in the ISAF operation in Afghanistan. Its distinguishing characteristic is its improved navigation system, which provides an extraordinarily high precision for target localization in terms of elevation and distance and can be used in a dismounted mode. The acquired target information, as well as the target assignment, are transferred by the ADLER II artillery control system to the Fire Support Officer (FSO). Strike monitoring and possibly required corrections are carried out by the FENNEK’s ADLER II weapon and fire control system. Furthermore, the Artillery Observer is equipped with a map-based positioning module.
The Dutch variant of the MRAT (Medium Range Anti-Tank) FENNEK is used to transport anti-tank guided missiles. For rapid deployment three guided missiles are transported on the exterior of the vehicle while two more missiles plus the launching ramp are stowed away in the soldier's section of the vehicle.
The Pioneer variant of the FENNEK is primarily deployed by its users for exploration and reconnaissance, making use if its near to noiseless mobility, the extensive protection and the ability to defend itself as well as its great self-sufficiency.
For the German Army KMW has developed and delivered the Joint Fire Support Team (JFST) variant. The team (two FENNEK vehicles) consist of an Artillery Observer and a Forward Air Controller (FAC). The JFST includes an exceptionally powerful long-range BAA of the latest generation. The additional connection to the voice and data radio communication of the German Air Force and Navy make the FENNEK a unique asset within the JFST. Moreover, a laser designator can locate targets for the Air Force and guide laser-guided munitions to the designated targets.
The Reconnaissance variant mission is seeing without being seen. Excellently camouflaged due to its low overall height, the extremely low infrared and radar signatures as well as an engine with low noise emission and equipped with state of the art reconnaissance equipment, the FENNEK readily satisfies the requirements for reconnaissance missions behind enemy lines. In modern mission scenarios of the 21st century its tasks include the observation of enemy troop movements and, in particular, the monitoring of embattled towns, cities or stretches of land, in order to observe, identify and check any suspicious activity immediately after it occurs.
The high reconnaissance ability is guaranteed by the vehicle's reconnaissance and observation system, known as “Beobachtungs- und Aufklärungsausstattung” (BAA). The sensor head, which is raisable up to a height of 3.30 meters, contains a thermal imaging device, a CCD-daylight camera as well as a laser rangefinder. The sensor head can be controlled in azimuth and elevation and be used remotely on a tripod up to 40 m from the vehicle, while controlled from inside the vehicle. The BAA system allows for detecting and identifying targets at long distances during day and night operations. The observation and reconnaissance is augmented with the help of a hybrid navigation system that determines the vehicles position and the magnetic north, using both GPS (Global Positioning System) as well as an Inertial Navigation System (INS). With the help of the laser range finder and the control unit of the BAA, the location coordinates of reconnoitered objects are determined, then processed further by the system control unit before being automatically transmitted to a digital location map.
For the German troops this is done by the „Führungs- und Waffeneinsatzsystem“ (FüWES). Adaptable interfaces enable the use of alternative, country specific hard- and software. Further systems, such as the surface sensor equipment (BSA), the radiation detection equipment as well as, in future, the Mini-UAV (Aladin) or the remote controlled mobile sensor system (MoSeS), additionally increase the reconnoitering capacity significantly.
