The First Marlborough
The first was a second-rate of 1,131 tons originally named the St Michael, which was renamed MARLBOROUGH in 1706 in honour of the Duke of Marlborough after his victories at the Battles of Blenheim, Ramilles and Malplaquet. The ship won battle honours in 1762 at Martinique and Havana.
The First Marlborough
The second ship of the name, a 74-gun third rate of 1,640 tons, had a glorious career, winning battle honours at St Vincent and The Saints in 1782, and the The First of June in 1794.
The Other Marlboroughs
Three further MARLBOROUGH's followed, the last of which was an "Iron Duke" Class battleship of 25,000 tons, which won the most recent battle honour at Jutland in 1916.
