Seebeck, G. Joint Stock Co.

The Seebeck shipyard, founded in 1876, developed from a small, metal-processing business in the heart of Bremerhaven into one of the leading shipbuilding companies in the region (Seebeckwerft AG) where some technical innovations of worldwide importance to shipping have been developed. The Seebeck Schiffswerft Maschinenfabrik und Trockendocks yard was founded at Bremerhaven in 1877 by Mr. G. Seebeck, who, when the firm was changed into a limited company, in 1895, became managing director.

The G. Seebeck Company, at Bremenhaven, closed its seventh business year on June 30, 1902, when a dividend of 10 per cent was declared. These works have also been very busy, especially in constructing steamers for fishing on the high seas. Three of these were completed during the year, while n, representing a value of some 3,500,000 marks ($833,000), are still under construction. During the same period, they built two passenger and freight steamers for East Asiatic coast service, one steamer for the Australian line, and one tugboat, all for the North German Lloyd Steamship Company. In the previous seven years, this company has built 192 ships, of which 23 steamers were for the North German Lloyd. The paid-up capital of the Seebeck Company has been increased by 1,000,000 marks ($238,000), making a total capitali2ation of 2,200,000 marks ($523,600).

By 1908 the yard had an area of about 8 acres, and a water frontage of 1,500 ft. There were four dry docks belonging to the firm for repairing purposes, covering an area of 8^ acres with a water frontage oí 1,000 ft. on the Geeste, and the firm has its own smelting works at Geestemunde. There are three berths, each capable of building vessels up to 375 ft. Since the company was formed, 250 vessels have been turned out by 1908, with engines giving 56,000 I.Hp. Numerous cargo and passenger steamers for German and foreign shipowners, notably 23 for the Norddeutscher Lloyd, and several for the Hamburg-Amerika Line.

The special feature of this yard was ship repairing, four dry docks with numerous workshops, cranes, etc., being available. The largest of these docks was built in 1903-4, and had a length of nearly 500 ft., and capable of lifting vessels of 10,000 tons register. About 1,300 workmen were employed in 1908.

The company moved to its present location in 1910.

Seebeckwerft AG and Schichau Unterweser AG merged to become Schichau Seebeckwerft AG in 1988.
