BAE 99-meter Corvette

The corvette is a highly capable vessel delivering anti-air and anti-surface capabilities, providing Economic Exclusion Zone protection and deterrent operations. The 99 metre corvette is a flexible and efficient platform, equipped to defend against both surface and air threats, offering modern navies a highly capable vessel with low running costs. They will be used to protect territorial waters, conducting coastal patrols in peacetime, with the ability to conduct search and rescue, as well as disaster relief, while providing a highly sophisticated ocean going capability for use in deterrent operations during times of tension.

Featuring a novel hull design and electric propulsion system it gives superb manoeuvrability, with an impressive three ship length stopping distance, and an extended range of 4,500 miles. Its stealthy design shrinks radar signatures and a slow speed drive mode means it can loiter undetected. This arrangement also helps to boost availability and deliver low through life costs, cutting fuel consumption and requiring minimal engine maintenance throughout its service life.The flexibility of this platform design allows each customer to select systems and equipment to meet individual needs, supported by a comprehensive weapons management system.The ship's flight deck is designed to support up to a 12 tonne helicopter, which covers most small to medium sized aircraft. With comprehensive hangar facilities, key maintenance can be carried out onboard.

These landmark vessels are designed to meet and augment the operational capabilities of the Royal Navy of Oman and will be the most advanced of their type in the world when completed. They are designed for endurance, with the ability to operate for long periods in high seas and the capability to embark a helicopter during deployment. Not forgetting the crew, the corvette offers the latest high standard of accommodation and recreational facilities with dedicated areas for each rank. It also provides additional living space for Joint Force Command staff.

The Project Khareef contract, secured in 2007, provides for the design and build of three 99 metre corvettes for the RNO. Highlighting the company's continued commitment to providing through-life support and services to its customers, the contract also includes training for RNO personnel, as well as an initial logistics support package for the ships. Project Khareef covers the design, build and supply of three 99 metre Offshore Patrol Vessels and associated equipment and services, including integrated logistics, such as handbooks and training, for the Royal Navy of Oman.

The Royal Navy of Oman's (RNO) second Corvette, Al-Rahmani, was commissioned 23 July 2010 at Portsmouth Naval Base. It is the second corvette out of three designed and built by BAE Systems for the RNO. The Commissioning Ceremony was held under the auspices of His Excellency Sayyed Badir bin Saud bin Harib Al-Busaidi the Minister Responsible Defence Affairs in the Sultanate of Oman. The Ceremony was attended by Lord Astor, the Under Secretary of State for Defence in the UK and Rear Admiral Abdullah bin Khamis bin Abdullah Al-Raisi, Commander of the Royal Navy of Oman (CRNO) in addition to a number of VIPs and representatives of the RNO and the UK Royal Navy.

Al Shamikh, the first of three ships being built by BAE Systems for the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) embarked on her first sea trials in the Solent 20 December 2010. Departing from the Company's Portsmouth facility, a combined BAE Systems and RNO crew put the ship through her paces, undertaking extensive platform testing for speed, propulsion and manoeuvrability in the first demonstration of the ship's capability at sea. Scott Jamieson, International Programmes Director at BAE Systems' Surface Ships division, said: "As first in class, Al Shamikh's trials mark a pivotal stage in the programme. It highlights the significant progress that has been made and clearly demonstrates the effective close working relationship we have developed with the Royal Navy of Oman and our continued commitment to deliver enhanced naval capability to our customer."

Following Al Shamikh's initial sea trials, she returned to Portsmouth before undergoing further integration and testing, with weapons trials in the New Year. The first of class was handed over to the RNO in 2011, following which the crew underwent the UK Royal Navy's Flag Officer Sea Training before the ship sails to Oman for warm weather trials. Al Rahmani, the second ship in the class, was launched in July 2010 and undertook sea trials in 2011, while the third ship, Al Rasikh, was launched in March 2011.
