Ricardo Alarcón de Quesada

Ricardo Alarcón de Quesada was born 21 May 1937 in Havana, Cuba. Since 1993, he has been the president of the National Assembly of Cuba. He attended the University of Havana, starting in 1954 and attained a doctorate in philospophy. While at the University he was active in the Federation of University Students(FEU),, which set the stage for his role in Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement, (which the first time attempt to over throw the Batista regime in 1955.) Over the next few years Alarcón helped in organizing a student branch of a guerrilla 'youth brigade.' He was eventually elected to the Vice President position, then President of the FEU

After the revolution, he served multitude of diplomatic posts. In 1962 Alarcón was appointed director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Americas division. Between 1966 and 1978 served as Cuba's represenative to the United Nations. He also held posts as the Vice President of the General Assembly of the United Nations, President of the Council of Administration to the United Nations Development Programme, and Vice-President of the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. In 1978 Alarcón was made the top minister of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in 1992. Futhermore, in 1993 he became the President of the National Assembly.

Alarcón is a supporter of Cuban policies and expresses these throughout the international media. He is keen to articulate views on issues such as the backing of the "Cuban Five" and the extradition request for Luis Posada Carriles (who is believed to be connected to the bombing of Cubana Flight 455).

His name has surfaced as a possible successor to Fidel Castro's communist regime in Cuba.
