Gloria sail training ship
The sea is unfair and blind, so that it can destroy any colossal vessel as well a small Caravel today. So whoever aspires to be a sailor should begin to exploit the forces of wind and sea, and nothing is better than a sailship to learn to navigate long routes. Just that knowledge allows sailor to know their limits and the sail ship on which it depends to survive and fulfill the mission.
Before the Great War it was a requirement for promotion officerl in transatlantic steam vessels have been an apprentice in a large sailboat of trade, since it was known that those officers remained calm and worked best under the most adverse situations. Despite the era of complex technological modernity in which we live, the sailing ships continue to provide the best and most comprehensive training and practice of seamanship and maneuver. This is because, not only because of the inherent difficulty, but by the result of the combination of the work of the propulsion and maneuver.
Colombia has a sailing school to supplement training and theoretical instruction given to students at the Naval School of officers. The use of tall ships as school ship, was implemented for several years, taking into account that it is a means of training at sea, so that although the contact with new technologies are limited and the relationship with naval operations is nil, increasingly in the world this type of boatis used to train.
Its history dates back to January 1966 when the government of Colombia authorized the Navy to buy a three - masted sailing ship and turn it into a training vessel to form and train the Colombian sailors. Although the purchase was postponed several times, months after Defense Minister General Gabriel Rebeiz wrote on a napkin the words "worth a sailboat" confirming the purchase of the boat.
In October of that year formally signed the contract that would authorize the construction of the ship ARC Gloria , which began in April 1967 and ended on December 2, 1967, the date on which he first touched the waters of the Ria de Bilbao , in Spain. Finally, on October 9, 1968, the ship sailed Gloria from the port of Ferrol, in La Coruna, Spain, heading to the port of Cartagena, Colombia, where he arrived a month later.
Over the years, the crew of the ARC ¨GLORIA¨, has maintained contact with different mariners in the world that do not use this type of sailing ships, which have expressed the need for a ship such as ¨GLORIA¨ and the advantages it would bring for them in the fulfilment of their missions; many of them now make significant investments to acquire them, and others to maintain and refurbish the sail ships they have.
Some of the advantages of a large sail ship, compared with other types of vessel, are a unique opportunity for the development of self-confidence, courage, firmness, and capacity to strengthen some of the qualities that a Navy requires of its leaders. This is how to use the wind in their favor, the ¨GLORIA¨ depends on the knowledge and work sailors when they are on board, taking into account that it must work as a team, situation that is decisive in a temporary, when fear and physical exertion are at its best to respond quickly and efficiently in any eventuality.
Likewise, civil society can also use the tall ships for the formation of young people, as evidenced by the several civilian ships that are normally present in the meetings of this type of vessels. Each Member and crew member of the vessel, should feel proud of the sail ship. One of the objectives of any Commander is to feel something very special and proud of it. A tall ship is a ship that facilitates this purpose, and in turn manages that that feeling will be reflected in the work that later develops in other ships.
There is no better way to represent a navy, and a country as the birthplace of sailors, than to have a large sail shipt. The sailors of the ¨GLORIA¨ are seen as an heir of the exploits of the Admiral José Prudencio Padilla and many other naval heroes.
The sail ship allows educated, full of historical but also modern meaning representation, represents a sport growing and carries a message of friendship to the thousands who visit us, and receive our love and joy, as well as make feel to compatriots abroad a piece of Colombian homeland in foreign waters. The opportunity of the sail ship in all ports for diplomatic representatives to bring aboard the most famous local personalities is a way to facilitating the daily work of the embassies and consulates that allows improving the country's international relations. The Ship ARC Gloria leaves a trail of yellow, blue and red in the seas of the world. The ship's name is a reference to the national anthem, Oh gloria inmarcesible (O Unfading Glory).
