Zhonghua Shipyard, established in 1926 in Shanghai, is a large-scale enterprise subordinate to the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). Since the reform and opening, the yard has persisted in the developing strategy of taking shipbuilding as the basis, developing a diversified economy at the same time.

As of mid-2000 Hudong Shipyard and Zhonghua Shipyard, two major ship builders in Shanghai, were negotiating a merger.

The yard is capable of building various kinds of ocean-going, coastal ships up to 20,000 DWT, and advanced war ships as well as auxiliary ships for the navy. The yard is now dedicating herself in developing advanced, high-tech and high value-add products, such as luxury tourist boat, multi-purpose ice-breaking tug, self-discharge cement carrier, multi-purpose container ship and new-type guided missile frigate. Besides, the yard also develops the non-marine products like gas-holder, pressure vessel, large steel structures and so on, and has the license to design and manufacture class-III pressure vessel and is capable of manufacturing various kinds of most complicated and high-tech pressure vessel.

Zhonghua Shipyard is one of the first export bases of machinery and electrical products by the State Council of the People's Republic of China. The yard has built various kinds of ships for Germany, Denmark, Norway, America, Japan, Tailand, Hongkong and Macao. Shanghai Edward Shipbuilding Co., Ltd, the largest joint-venture in CSSC by the yard and a Germany company and held by the yard, has built LPG/LNG carrier and container ships for export. The yard has a good and widespread cooperation with ship-owners, designing companies and equipment markers from abroad.

Covering an area of 350,000 square meter, it has 6,000 staff and workers including more than 700 senior and middling technicians and possesses 2,600 sets of various equipment and facilities, 3 building berths capable of building ships up to 20,000 DWT, 3 outfitting quays of 1,000 M long and the biggest capability of lifting is 120T. In addition, she has introduced from abroad the numerical control under water plasma cutting machine, numerical control pipe bender, steel casting production line and large plate bending press, etc., in high precision and performance. The yard is also equipped with the computer graphic working station, plotter and the CAD/CAM is widely used. Quays include the New Quay, 145m long, 2x20T cranes, fit for 20,000DWT ships of 180 meters LOA, and the original Quay, 350m long, 18T & 2x25T cranes, fit for three 10,000DWT ships simultaneously.
