The laser guided bombs YL-15 of the North China Corporation (NORINCO) possesses a strange design, it looks like a Spike NLOS anti-tank missile but it is a bomb. It is not clear what advantages the four long wings of the YL-15 will create for this type of bomb. According to the news of the 2016 Zhuhai Air Show, Chinas latest Yunlei YL [Thunder cloud] small-diameter precision guided munition became one of the hot spots of the air show. These advanced guided weapons, which are lighter and smaller than traditional guided bombs, are suitable for all kinds of fighters, bombers, Pterosaur 2 UAVs, CH-5 UAVs, and even armed helicopters. For example, the J-20 fighter jet is expected to carry at least 12 small-diameter guided bombs in its internal magazine, which can attack 12 tanks and other targets in one dispatch. The Chinese small-diameter guided bombs on display form a family sequence, covering different heavyweights and different purposes, and can compete with the most advanced SDB II family guided bombs in the United States.

The technological gap between the powers of Russia and Europe has been widening. From a historical point of view, the early guided bombs had the disadvantages of lacking day and night combat capability, difficulty in attacking multiple targets at the same time, and lack of autonomous guidance functions. The emergence of the first-generation satellite-guided bomb JDAM in the United States broke this dilemma. It uses GPS satellite positioning system information to revise its own inertial navigation system to ensure that it can still complete its guidance and accurately hit the target in all-weather conditions day and night. Moreover, JDAM, which uses ordinary bombs to increase its guidance kit, is extremely low cost. In actual combat, JDAM has achieved great success.

China already had satellite-guided bombs similar to JDAM, such as the Feiteng FT series bombs. If the FT-1 bomb is launched at an altitude of 5000-12000 meters and a range of 0.6-0.9 times the speed of sound, the attack distance can reach 20 kilometers, and the accuracy can be controlled within 10-30 meters according to user needs.

JDAM had several shortcomings: 1. The volume and weight are still large; 2. The accuracy of hits is limited, which makes it impossible to reduce the total amount of explosives carried; 3. The ability to accurately strike moving targets, such as attack sports Tanks and armored vehicles; Fourth, the aerodynamic performance of this type of guided bombs transformed from ordinary bombs is poor and fails to maximize the range and hit accuracy. In addition, modern warfare requires attention to reduce the problem of collateral damage, which also requires high precision to reduce the total amount of charge and avoid accidentally injuring the surrounding people.

Chinese military workers combined the satellite positioning correction inertial guidance system with the photoelectric terminal guidance technology, so that China's latest small-diameter bombs have obtained a composite guidance system. Because of the better end hit accuracy than satellite positioning correction, the bomb will explode closer to the target (as close as one meter), and there is no need to carry too many explosives. It can be from the past 250, 500 kg Level, down to 100 or even 50 kg level.

Because of the use of photoelectric terminal guidance, which includes multiple high-precision terminal guidance methods such as TV, thermal imaging, and semi-active laser, the new type of bomb has the ability to strike moving targets. Among them, thermal imaging and semi-active laser guidance have fully autonomous day and night good weather guidance capabilities, which can fully enable bombs to effectively find, track and hit high-speed tanks and armored vehicles or speedboat targets.

The latest related technological breakthrough of Chinese military workers is to install millimeter-wave terminal guidance equipment for this type of bomb to ensure that it obtains all-weather terminal guidance capabilities day and night. This is a capability that the photoelectric terminal guidance method does not possess. The CM-506 small-diameter guided bomb even has a millimeter wave/thermal imaging dual-mode terminal guidance capability, which has the advantages of both.

In terms of aerodynamic design, Chinese military workers have broken through the shackles of transforming existing ordinary bombs and designed high-efficiency aerodynamic shapes and control methods for new small-diameter guided bombs.

For example, the latest Chinese guided bomb is equipped with a diamond-backed wing. This foldable wing on the back can provide greater lift, allowing the bomb to fly to 90 kilometers. More importantly, the new aerodynamic shape optimizes the bomb's kinetic energy control method and the bomb's flight trajectory to improve the bomb's ability to penetrate the target. China's latest small-diameter guided bomb can advance in the best flight mode and attack the target with the most appropriate hit angle during the flight. For example, when attacking a solid cover, hit the target at an angle completely perpendicular to the ground, thereby maximizing the bomb's ability to penetrate the top of the cover. This allows bombs of only 100 or even 50 kilograms to penetrate the reinforced concrete roof that is about one meter thick, ensuring that the charge part explodes inside the bunker, maximizing the killing effect.

Although the newly designed and specially manufactured small-diameter guided bombs will be more expensive than guided bombs modified from ordinary bombs, their combat effectiveness and the amount of bombs carried at a time far exceed the latter, meaning that their cost performance will eventually be comprehensive. It is dominant and can be used for large-scale air-to-ground combat.

As the accuracy of the Beidou satellite positioning system continues to improve, China's military and foreign trade weapons users will be able to completely get rid of the shackles of the US GPS system and obtain a completely autonomous precision guidance method. After Chinese military workers developed the latest series of small-diameter guided bombs, the technical level of air-to-ground weapons of our fighter jets has leapt into the world's top level.
