Ningbo, the largest commercial sea port in Zhejiang Province, is one of the shipping junctures linking ports in northern china with those in southern China. It caters for Ningbo's economic and coastal industrial development, serves areas in Zhejinag Province and along the Zhejiang-Jiangxi railroad, and handles large volumes of bulk cargo transshipment for Shanghai Economic Area and places along the middle and lower reaches of the Changjiang River

The Fenghua River connects with inland river ports and the Hangzhou - Ningbo Canal links the Qxiantang and Yongjiang Rivers. The Hangzhou - Ningbo railroad, joins all the ports areas to the Shanghai - Hangzhou and Zhejing - Jianxi railroads. Highways link the port to cities and regions with Shenjiang Province and beyond.

Hong Kong and Kowloon Wharf and Godown Co has signed an agreement with the Ningbo Port Authority to jointly develop Beilun Port which will be developed as a deep water port capable of receiving third and fourth generation container ships. An ore handling wharf to handle 200,000 dwt vessel is under construction. Van Ommeren Tank Terminals Ningbo (VOTTN) is a $10 million European - Chinese joint ventures, with its own berths, storage loading, discharge and various other facilities in Zheuhai harbour.
