Luoyang/CASC LT-2/LS-500J Laser Guided Bomb
The LT-2 is a laser-guided glide bomb for fixed or low-speed point and hard targets on land or at sea, which consists of the laser-guided bomb, laser designating pod, ground laser designator and comprehensive support equipment. It has the capability of implementing day/night precision air-to-surface strikes.
The LT-2 (Ler Ting 2) LGB is China's first volume production guided bomb. The basic bomb kit is sized for a 500 kg / 1,000 lb class general purpose bomb body. The seeker uses a Paveway I/II style annular airfoil seeker with a conventional quadrant detection assembly. LT-2 weapon system has the following operation modes: 1) Surface designating: surface personnel comes near the target and designates it with a laser designator. Then one or more aircraft strike the target. 2) Buddy aircraft designating: one aircraft designates the target with a laser designator and other aircraft strike the target. 3) Self aircraft designating: the aircraft designates the target with its own laser designating pod and strike it with the laser-guided bomb.
China displayed its military might by exhibiting a series of brand new precision assault weapons during the Zhuhai air show, which opened on 01 November 2006 in South China's Guangdong Province. The weapons on show included precision-guided bombs and long-range striking systems hailed by military experts as symbols that the People's Liberation Army has entered an era of precision attack. In a rare collective appearance, the air show brought together a number of new air, naval and surface-to-surface missiles, reports said. The country is moving to fill gaps in its tactical weapons capability, and to bolster its ability to support combat aircraft export proposals with credible guided-weapons packages. The show included the presentation of several previously unseen air-launched tactical systems.
For example, Luoyang showed the LT-2 500-kilogram laser-guided bomb and the LS-6 glide-guided bomb, developed by the China Aviation Industry Corporation I. Both types of bombs were designed on the basis of traditional bombs. Rival China Aerospace and Technology Corp. unveiled its FT-1 and FT-3 satellite-guided weapons family.
