Lianyungang is a foreign trade port engaging in sea-land cargo intermodal transport. It is the shortest gateway to the sea for the 11 provinces and regions in eastern China. The Lianyungang Economic and Technical Development Zone is mid way between the city and the port. The construction of the zone is now basically completed, which will boost up the cargo throughput in the port.
The Longhai Railroad links the port to 11 provinces. The interlinking highway network extends into Anhui, Henan, Jiangsu and Shandong Provinces. The river connects with inland waterways and the Grand Canal.
Maoling harbour area is now in its third phase of development, which will create six berths, two for containers and four for general cargo. A 10-berth project in the Xugou Port area should be completed in 1997.
The recent completion of the 6,700 m seawall from Huanshizhui to Juangjiazhui will enable approximately 70 berths of 10,000t class to be built.
