Liang Guanglie

Liang Guanglie, a native of Santai, Sichuan Province, was born in December 1940. He joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in November 1959 and the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) in January 1958. He graduated from Henan University where he had completed a political theory correspondence education program. He is a graduate of in-service junior college and is an army general.

As of 2004 Liang is a member of the Central Military Commission and chief of the general staff of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

From 1958-1960 Liang was a soldier in the PLA and was promoted to squad leader of the engineer company, 2nd Regiment, 1st Division, 1st Ground Force Army. In 1960 Liang became Deputy commander, commander of the engineer company and quartermaster of the special agent company, Second Regiment, 1st Division, 1st Ground Force Army. Then in 1963 he was promoted to Staff officer of the Operation and Training Branch.

From 1963 to 1964 Liang was a student of Xinyang PLA Infantry School. Then from 1964 to 1966 he was a Staff officer of the Operation and Training Branch, Headquarters of the 2nd Regiment, 1st Division, 1st Ground Force Army. In 1966 he was promoted to a Staff officer of the Engineer Branch.

From 1966 to 1970 Xu served as a Staff officer of the Operation and Training Branch of the Headquarters of the 1st Division of the 1st Army of the Ground Force. Then in 1970 he was assigned to the Operational Department, Wuhan Military Area Command.

In 1971 Liang was promoted to Deputy chief of the 1st section, Operational Department, Wuhan Military Area Command and from 1974 to 1979 he was promoted to Deputy head. In 1979 he became the Deputy commander, 58th Division, 20th Ground Force Army.

From 1981 to 1983 Liang was the Commander of the 58th Division, 20th Ground Force Army and concurrently studied at a short-term course of the PLA Military Academy. In 1983 he became Deputy commander, 20th Ground Force Army. Then from 1985 to 1990 he was Commander, 20th Group Army of the PLA Ground Force and continued his studies at the University of National Defense. Liang completed a political theory correspondence education program at Henan University in July 1986.

From 1990 to 1993 commander, 54th Group Army of the PLA and in 1993 became Chief of staff of the Beijing Military Area Command. Then from 1995 to 1997 he was Deputy commander, Beijing Military Area Command.In 1997 Liang became the Commander of Shenyang Military Area Command.

From 1999 to 2002 Liang was Commander and Deputy Party committee secretary of the Nanjing Military Area Command. In 2002 Liang was elected to become a Member of the CPC Central Military Commission and chief of the general staff of the PLA. In March 2003, he also became a member of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China. Liang has also served as an alternate member of the 13th and 14th CPC Central Committee and a member of the 15th CPC Central Committee. He was a member of the 16th CPC Central Committee.
