Guo Boxiong
Guo Boxiong, a native of Liquan, Shaanxi Province, was born in July 1942. He joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in March 1963 and joined Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) in August 1961. In 2003 Guo was elected to Vice-Chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission(CMC) of the People's Republic of China. Guo served as a member of the 15th and 16th CPC Central Committee and, as of 2007, is a member of the 17th CPC Central Committee and member of the Political Bureau of the 16th CPC Central Committee. As Vice-Chairman of the CMC Guo is executive deputy chief of the Headquarters of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army and deputy secretary of the Party Committee of the Headquarters of the General Staff of the PLA.
Guo started out as a worker at the No. 408 Factory of Xingping County, Shaanxi Province from 1958 to 1961. He became a soldier in the PLA in 1961 and by 1964 had progress to squad leader of the Eighth Company of the 164th Regiment of the 55th Division of the 19th Army of the PLA Ground Force. In 1964 Guo was promoted to platoon commander of the Eighth Company of 164th Regiment of the 55th Division of the 19th Army of the PLA Ground Force.
In 1965 Guo became a staff member of the Publicity Group of the Political Section of the 164th Regiment of the 55th Division of the 19th Army of the PLA . In 1966 Guo moved to the Combat Training Group of the Headquarters of the 164th Regiment . Guo served as a leader of the Combat Training Group of the Headquarters of the 164th Regiment in 1970 to 1971. In 1971 Guo became a staff officer, deputy head and head of the Combat Training Section of the Headquarters of the 19th Army of the PLA Ground Force. From 1981 to 1982 Guo was Chief of staff of the 55th Division of the 19th Army of the PLA Ground Force and similtaneously studied at the Military Academy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army until 1983.
In 1982 Guo was promoted to Deputy director of the Combat Department of the Headquarters of the Lanzhou Military Area Command. A year later in 1983 he became Chief of staff of the 19th Army of the PLA . From 1985 to 1990 he was Deputy chief of staff of the Lanzhou Military Area Command. Then from 1990 to 1993 Commander of the 47th Group Army of the PLA Ground Force. In 1993 Guo became the Deputy Commander of the Beijing Military Area Command. From 1997 to 1999 Guo was Commander of the Lanzhou Military Area Command.
In 1999 Guobecame a Member of the Central Military Commission, executive deputy general chief of staff of the PLA and deputy secretary of the Party Committee of the PLA General Staff. Guo joined the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, vice chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission in 2002.
