Serving the Technical Renovation of the National Economy and Serving the Market

China's aviation industry also gave full play to its advantages to speed up transplanting military technology into civil production and to provide services for the technical renovation of the national economy and to serve the market. Aviation Industry had provided more than 400 items of special equipment, instrument and production lines for technical renovations of 28 industries, i.e.: energy, transportation, light industry, food industry, textile, construction, chemistry, metallurgy, medicine and environment protection and, provided more than 3,000 items of several thousand hundreds of spares for imported large equipment of oil industry, chemistry, chemical fibre, metallurgical equipment and heavy duty trucks, saving large amount of foreign currency for the country.

Providing service to the country's development of energy was an important direction of civil production development of aviation industry. The industrial gas turbine power generating sets derived from aeroengine are now already operating in oil field for power generating, heat supplying and water injection, which have advantages of light weight and high thermal efficiency and could burn natural gas and oil field gas for combined supply of heat and electricity. It is convenient to transport and very useful for oil field development. A power generating set provided by Shenyang Aero Engine Factory generating electricity with oil field gas in Daqing Oil Field generated 26,980,000 watt-hours of electricity and supplied 75,000 tons of steam in one year's operation, with which the investment could be recovered within two years, demonstrating the cost effectiveness of this energy installation. When the refrigeration turbine was used for the recovery of oil field gas - light hydrogen carbon gas - by the Aero' Accessory Research Institute, the previous burned away oil field gas has been recovered. There are 30 units being supplied and each unit can recover more than 100,000 tons of light hydrogen carbon gas annually, valued RMB 70,000,000 yuan. Premier Zhao Ziyang showed special inter¬est in this project and instructed associated departments to "Support this matter which is anoth¬er achievement of transplanting military industrial technology into civil production."

Successful facts proved that transplanting military technology into civil production had broadened the application scope of the industry's technical advantage and superiority. Shenyang Aero Engine Design Institute helped two chemical fibre factories in Dandong and Hangzhou successfully manufacture China's first viscous auto-screen filtering machine and viscous long threat pressing and washing machine by using its high temperature and anti-corrosion technologies for aero engine development, thus enabling China's viscous filtration technology jumped from the level of the 1940s to the level of 1970s. In co-operation with the Ministry of Urban and Rural Construction and Environment Protection, the Ministry of Aviation Industry used aero hydraulic technology to develop hydraulic pump, hydraulic motor and hydraulic valve for construction machinery. Their main technical performance reached the level of similar products abroad in the 1980s and some of the performance even surpassed that of foreign products. These products had increased the number of Chinese made parts on the hydraulic excavator from 89% to 95%. The coal mine safety monitoring system developed by using precision measuring and electronic integrating technology of the aviation industry was the first of its kind ever developed in China to provide more safety to coal industry.

Another important aspect of aviation industry in implementing the policy of military - civil combination, was to insist on developing such civil products that requires similar technology to make and sell well in the market. Civil production is now developing very fast, which had already reached more than 3,000 kinds of products. Some of the civil products had already been channelled into the State industrial management. The whole industry had established 60 production lines for batch production of mainstay civil products in 1986, including textile and light industry machines, medical equipments, automobiles, motorbikes, bicycles, washing machines and refrigerators. The quality of these civil products had been improved gradually and in the eight years from 1979 to 1986, two items of civil products had been awarded National Gold Medal, 18 items had been awarded Silver Medal and 162 items had been awarded the Quality Prize of the Ministry of Aviation Industry.
