BNS Osman (Missile Frigate JIANGHU I Class)
The frigate Osman, commissioned by the Bangladesh Navy in 1989, is a 1,500-ton Chinese built Jianghu class warship. BNS Osman is one of five frigates in the Bangladeshi Navy, but the only one with modern C-802A anti-ship missiles, and FM-90N surface-to-air missiles. The C-802A missile, according to experts, is a modified version of Chinese Ying Ji-802 (western version SACCADE) with its weight reduced from 815 kg to 715 kg to increase its strike range from 42 km to 120 km.
The radar-equipped missile can carry a 165-kg warhead. Since its guidance equipment has strong anti-jamming capability, the ships it targets have a very low success rate in intercepting the missile. The hit probability of the Ying Ji-802 is rated as 98 percent. It can be launched from aircraft, ships, submarines and even land-based vehicles and is considered to be on par with the US Harpoon, arguably the best anti-ship missile among present day systems.
Two Bangladesh Navy ships -- BNS OSMAN and BNS MADHUMATI -- took part in the UN Peacekeeping Mission under UNIFIL in 2010. A frigate of Bangladesh Navy, BNS OSMAN, and a large patrol craft, BNS MADHUMATI, started their operation in the Mediterranean Sea on May 15 and 17 respectively as part of the peacekeeping mission. BNS OSMAN and MADHUMATI left Chittagong port on April 12 and reached Beirut Port in Lebanon on May 7. Two ships were included in UN mission from that day. These ships had stopover in Colombo, Oman and Jeddah port during their voyage towards Lebanon. Bangladesh was the first country in South Asia to send two warships -- BNS Osman and BNS Madhumati -- to the UN Peacekeeping Mission.
