Forgacs Engineering Pty Ltd
Stephen Forgacs arrived in Australia from Hungary in 1957 as a young tradesman, and set out to create the Forgacs Group as a provider of world class engineering services. Following the acquisition of the Ullman Engineering business in Newcastle in 1962, and the building of the Hexham Engineering workshops in 1970, and the Carrington Engineering in Parker Street (formerly Newcastle Engineering) in 1999, Forgacs set out to further develop the ship repair and ship construction businesses. This has been achieved with the acquisition of the Newcastle Floating Dock in 1987, the Tomago shipyard in 1997 (formerly Carrington Slipways), and the Cairncross Dockyard in Brisbane in 1999. This breadth of facilities and infrastructure in ship repair is unmatched by any other organisation in Australia.
Forgacs is Australia’s largest privately-owned ship building, ship repair and engineering company with a proud place in the nation’s maritime capability. Forgacs services international markets and key naval contracts at seven of the most sought-after sites in South-East Asia – three on deep-water locations. Past work includes: Refit and upgrade of HMAS MANOORA and KANIMBLA in preparation for Royal Australian Navy service; Docking, repair and maintenance of HMAS TOBRUK, KANIMBLA, MANOORA and SUCCESS; In-water repairs and maintenance of Afloat and Amphibious Support Ships and ANZAC class vessels.
With one of the largest networks of Machine Shops and Fabrication sites in the country, the company can boast undercover Workshop and Warehousing areas of 33,500 square metres in NSW alone and a further undercover 9,500 square meters in our two Queensland operations. The total site area of freehold owned sites alone runs to over 36 Hectares (360,000 square metres). The combined NSW and Queensland undercover workshop and fabrication area of 43,000 square metres, and massive adjacent assembly areas, brings an unmatched ability to take on large infrastructure projects that can be test assembled prior to transport to client sites. Our direct access to water loading at Newcastle, Tomago, and Brisbane enables more complete assembly prior to transport, thereby reducing client on-site assembly risks and costs, and enabling the use of Heavy Lift ship and Barge loading capability for complex logistical projects. All sites are accredited to Lloyds quality standards, and maintain a range of cranage and heavy engineering equipment, that are amongst the largest of their kind on the east coast of Australia.
