M393 105mm HE/HEP
High explosive/high explosive plastic (HE/HEP) ammunition will provide the capability for the Stryker Mobile Gun System [MGS] to meet its Key Performance Parameter of creating an opening in a double reinforced concrete wall through which infantry can pass. The M393A3 HE cartridge will exceed the current performance obtained from the M393A2 HEP cartridge against the concrete wall. The M393A2 HEP cartridge was type-classified in 1965, has exceeded the shelf life for which it wasdesigned and does not meet current standards for soldier safety. The new HE round isbeing procured as a non-developmental item (NDI). An inert cartridge will be developed to provide for gunnery qualification and training. Itwill be similar in appearance and ballistically similar to the M393A3 tactical cartridge. Currently, there are approximately 15,000 serviceable training cartridges in the Army's stockpile, which could support short-term training requirements. This item is being procured as an NDI in parallel with the M393A3 cartridge.
