M872 Semi-trailer

The M872A4 Semi-trailer is a dual purpose, break bulk/container transporter, 34-ton capacity, with a flatbed. Its' mission is line and local haul of break bulk cargo, inter-modal cargo containers, as well as shelters. The M872A4 is based on a commercial 34-ton payload, platform style, three-axle, dual-purpose semi-trailer. The required semi-trailer will have a rated payload of 68,000 pounds with an open deck, flatbed area that will accommodate a standard, 40 foot long, standard width, inter modal cargo container. The required semi-trailer will be capable of daily operating ranges of 300 miles at sustained speeds up to 65 mph.

Unique military characteristics include Chemical Agent Resistant Coating (CARC), military lift and tie down provisions in accordance with MIL-STD 209J, and a 24-volt blackout lighting system. The required semi-trailer must be built to meet severe duty operation that includes movement off-road when coupled with a commercially based line haul tractor. The semi-trailer is required to have the ability to load/offload with C141, C-5 and C-17 Aircraft, and meet all applicable NATO inter-operability criteria. The semi-trailer must have sufficient ground clearance to load and offload at a 15-degree pitch in order to roll-on and roll-off shipping vessel loading ramps. The required semi-trailer is to be equipped with the following: 24-Volt Anti-Lock Braking System with PLC, Radial Tires, a bolt-on upper coupler plate, 12 and 24-volt electrical receptacles, LED lighting, a spare tire carrier, and a side panel kit with onboard stowage that will protect and contain the side panels when stored.

The intent is to award a requirements type production contract in 2003 to acquire an estimated 1200 units with additional estimated requirements of 800 units over the remainder of the contract period. All production quantities are estimated based on available funding and are subject to change. An initial delivery of 5 (five) each test units will be 90 days after contract award. Government testing will be performed to confirm structural and durability integrity. A Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) quantity of production representative models will be awarded as testing of the first 5 (five) units delivered proceeds. Testing of LRIP trailers is estimated to take 90 to 180 days. An Initial Production Inspection will be performed on the LRIP deliveries with testing performed to assure that LRIP trailers meet the performance specification. The results of LRIP testing will determine the approval date for the Full Rate Production (FRP).
