Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System (CSASS)
The US Army, Army Contracting Command, New Jersey on behalf of the Project Manager Soldier Weapons (PMSW), located at Picatinny Arsenal, NJ conducting a market survey in July 2012 to identify potential sources for manufacturing a complete system or reconfiguring some or all of the existing 7.62 x 51mm M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System (SASS) currently available in Army inventory to the specifications identified in this notice.
The current M110 is a lightweight, direct gas operated, semi-automatic, box magazine fed, 7.62 x 51mm rifle intended to engage and defeat personnel targets out to 800 meters. The M110 7.62 mm Semi-Automatic Sniper System (SASS) is an anti-personnel and light materiel weapon that fires 7.62 mm ammunition out to a maximum effective range of 800 meters. The M110’s Leupold Mark IV 3.5–10x scope provides both a wide field of view at low magnification for close-in engagements and a narrow field of view for precision long shots at high magnification. The SASS leverages a rapid fire and rapid reload design, variable-power day optic sight, and 10- or 20-round detachable magazines.
This notice is to determine if there are potential sources capable of reconfiguring existing US Army M110 SASS's, or manufacturing new complete systems to meet the following criteria:

- Grip: A modular, adjustable pistol grip.
- Trigger: A non-adjustable match style trigger.

On April 6, 2016 Heckler & Koch Defense Inc. was awarded a contract worth up to $44.5 million from the U.S. Army for a new compact sniper rifle. The Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System (CSASS) will provide the service with a small, lightweight, highly accurate weapon, addressing a critical need to replace older and heavier rifles currently in use. Under terms of the award, HK Defense will produce up to 3,643 rifles. Bids were solicited via the Internet with eight received with an estimated completion date of March 30, 2022. Funding and work location will be determined with each order. Army Contracting Command, Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey, is the contracting activity (W15QKN-16-D-0051).
The new HK rifle is a lightweight variant of the 7.62 mm G28 in use by the German Army. The HK CSASS capitalizes on the proven G28 design, meeting the Army’s requirements for accuracy, reliability, and size. Heckler & Koch will also provide spare parts, support, and training to the Army.
“This award represents another significant achievement for Heckler & Koch,”said Wayne Weber, President of Heckler & Koch USA. “The HK CSASS rifle is a substantial upgrade over the Army’s current sniper rifles, enhancing accuracy and reliability while providing for a handier, more compact arm. It also confirms Heckler & Koch as a leader in providing small arms to the U.S. military.”
The G28 is a military version of the civilian semi automatic competition rifle MR308. Deployed in the established 7.62 x 51 calibre, the “Designated Marksman Rifle” (DMR) ensures accuracy of 1.5 MOA whilst enabling a full night fighting capability. Providing a maximum effective range and a high first round hit probability up to 600 meters, the G28 will also allow suppressive fire against man size targets accurately up to 800 meters.
With its green/brown (RAL8000) tone, the G28 offers a camouflage colour scheme that is being accepted around the world. An additional conversion kit supports user and mission specific requirements where the G28 can be configured to a Patrol version and be used as a Assault rifle.
