Advanced Eye-safe Rangefinder Observation System (AEROS)

As of late 2002, the Advanced Eye-safe Rangefinder Observation System was in the developmental stage for eventual procurement by the US Marine Corps and as a replacement to the AN/GVS-5 Laser Infrared Observation Set.

AEROS is meant to be interoperable with both the Precision Lightweight Global Positioning System Receiver and with the Target Location Designation Handoff System (TLDHS). Equipped with digital capability, the system will provide eye-safe laser rangefinding capabilities, thus avoiding the possibility of accidental bliding that marred previous systems. The system will also have digital messaging capability.

Funds for the Advanced Eye-safe Rangefinder Observation System were included in the program objective memorandum for FY-04.
