Operation Sterling

April, 2006

In April, 2006, U.S. and Iraqi army and security forces launched Operation Sterling against targets at two locations in Basra.

Coalition officials said a known insurgent cell was there planning and conducting weapon smuggling and attacks against Iraqi security forces and coalition forces. The operation was deemed successful by U.S. forces. 14 individuals were detained and a "significant" weapons cache was discovered during the operation.
