Operation Muthana Strike

July 4, 2005

Operation Muthana was a July 4, 2005 joint effort between the Iraqi Army and Task Force Baghdad soldiers to apprehend insurgents using safe houses in neighborhoods next to Baghdad International Airport. The operation also hoped to uncover illegal weapons stores and gather intelligence on future insurgent attacks.

The morning operation involved 600 Iraqi troops and 250 U.S. soldiers who used cordon-and-search tactics to maintain a perimeter around the area.

Over 100 individuals were detained as a result of the operation, including reportedly foreign fighters from Egypt.
