Operation Lion was designed to build upon Operations Panthers and Bruins which had taken place earlier in November and secured areas of Ramadi. 200 Iraqi Army Soldiers and 250 Soldiers from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Marine Division entered the Tammim area of southern Ramadi on November 22 to conduct cordon and search procedures.
Ramadi had been a focal point for insurgent sects, many of whom had been using violent tactics in an attempt to influence the December 15 elections. The Operation resulted in the apprehension of 20 suspected insurgents.
