Operation Hunter (or Sayaid in Arabic) was designed to secure the border area between Iraq and Syria near the town of Qaim in the Al-Anbar province. The goal was to gain control over the Euphrates River valley while disrupting insurgent activites there and denying entrance to the country for foreign fighters from Syria. This operation was to be carried out by U.S. in conjunction with Iraqi border gaurds and parts of the Iraqi 7th Army Division.
The operation was initiated in July when an Army squadron of Stryker vehicles moved south from Mosul to establish an operational base near the town of Rawah on the Euphrates River.
