Coalition and Iraqi forces conducted Operation Carentan beginning in October and focusing on Diyala and Salah Ad Din provinces in northern Iraq. The Operation was responsible for detaining over 700 suspected insurgents and clearing 120 weapons caches by November 1. Brigadier General Donald Alston, spokesman for MNF-I, reported that tips from local Iraqis were responsible for locating 50% of IEDs cleared by the Operation. The Operation was aimed at disrupting terrorist activity and increasing the visibility of the ISF.
