Soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Division initiated Operation Aloha in Kirkuk. The operation was designed as a knock and search operation to disrupt any anti-Iraqi forces activity. The knock and search operation differs from normal military operations in that soldiers are making more of a diplomatic effort with residents whose houses they search. In Operation Aloha, soldiers first sought permission of occupants to conduct a search of the residence. However, houses were eventually searched even if permission was not given.
