UN Resolution 1325

UN Security Council Resolution 1325, adopted in October 2000, stated that women needed be an integral part of the Iraqi reconstruction, involved at all levels of the decision making process.

Specifically, Resolution 1325 called on member states to, "recognize that an understanding of the impact of armed conflict on women and girls, effective institutional arrangements to guarantee their protection and full participation in the peace process can significantly contribute to the maintenance and promotion of international peace and security."

The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) has also taken action, working with the General Federation of Iraqi Women (GFIW). UNIFEM AND GFIW have teamed together to provide aid to the disadvantaged women of post-war Iraq.

Two GFWI training centers have been restored in Basrah and Diyala and are used to teach professional skills to women that are needed in the job market.

UNIFEM created the "Support to the National Committee for the Advancement of Iraq Women," which concentrates on gender analysis and policies in the reconstruction process.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNPFA) has begun to aid pregnant Iraqi women displaced by the war. They have placed medical supplies in locations where women refugees are anticipated, including mobile emergency obstetric care surgery units, ambulances, and ultrasound scanners. In addition, antibiotics and other medications designed for sanitary deliveries and postnatal care supplies, contraceptives and other medicals essentials are in place.
