Lt. General Jared L. Bates (retired)
Chief of Staff

Jared L. Bates, is a former commanding general of the 2nd Armored Division. During his military career, General Bates commanded soldiers at every level from a platoon to a Division. He served or commanded in an extremely wide variety of units including ranger, airborne and various mechanized units.

As a junior officer, General Bates' unit assignments as included airborne infantry battalion in Germany and two tours in the republic of Viet Nam, as well as an instructor at the Army's Ranger School.  After promotion to a field grade officer, General Bates served as a staff officer in the Army's Personnel Center, and 2nd, Ranger Battalion. In addition he commanded the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry, was G3 of the 3rd Infantry Division, commanded the 3rd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division and was Chief of Staff of that Division.

As a General Officer, General Bates was Assistant Division Commander of the 7th Infantry Division, both as J-3, U.S. Forces Command and as Commanding General, 5th Infantry Division. He later served as Commanding General for the 2nd Armored Division.  He followed his command tour with an assignment as Vice J3, The Joint Staff.  General Bates was promoted to Lieutenant General in 1995 serving as Inspector General, U.S. Army until is retirement in 1997.

He has been awarded the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Army Distinguished Service Medal (with oak leaf cluster), the Legion of Merit (with three oak leaf clusters), and the Bronze Star Medal ( with oak leaf cluster). 

Prior to being appointment Chief of Staff for Reconstruction in Iraq, General Bates was serving as Senior Vice President and General Manager for National Group, MPRI.
