AIR
DEFENSE ARTILLERY
OBSERVATION: Planning for air defense early warning lacks detail.
DISCUSSION: In this environment, air defense early warning is a challenge. Distances preclude the use of a standard air defense early warning FM radio net. At the same time, there should be access through both ALO/ Air Force channels and command nets from Division and higher, to early warning information from AWACS and other elements. There is a requirement to provide early warning, oriented toward rotary wing aircraft, to all soldiers in the AOR. Therefore, there must still be a way to notify all that there are (possibly hostile) aircraft in the area.
LESSONS: Air defense early warnings must be passed quickly and efficiently when required. The means for this must be quick, sure, simple and redundant. Warnings must be passed over unit command nets, and provision made to pass messages as flash traffic when required. Like other force protection measures, these warnings must be practiced and drilled until they are correct.
