OBSERVER/CONTROLLERS CERTIFICATION
Throughout this newsletter you've heard me speak about Observer/Controllers (O/C). Just exactly, what is an O/C? An O/C is:
- An individual tasked to provide administrative control, evaluate task performance, and provide constructive feedback to participants during a training exercise.
- An individual who is a Subject-Matter Expert (SME) of the task to be trained.
- A highly motivated and effective instructor.
The O/C is the cornerstone of an effective IDT/AT Lane Training Program. When selecting O/Cs, you must ensure that you are selecting your most capable soldiers. As stated earlier in this newsletter, why would you entrust the training of your soldiers to anyone else?
Just because you've selected your most capable soldier does not mean he can conduct a lane. It is the commander's responsibility to ensure your O/Cs are certified. Why is this such a big deal? Your Lane Training Program must be standardized. The only way to do this is to train your O/Cs to fit your program. Do not get O/C certification confused with task validation. Certification has to do with the lane process and validation is task-specific. Leaders must validate that the O/Cs are SMEs in the task to be trained. Do not assume that because a soldier has been to a particular school that he is an expert in every task taught at that level. It is the commander's responsibility to ensure that the O/Cs for his LTX are both certified and verified. If available, try to find a structured O/C certification course that will provide your soldiers with a solid foundation on the lane process.
