FOREWORD
CALL's Combat Training Center (CTC) Quarterly Bulletin normally contains articles about training for and conducting tactical-level missions. The articles focus on successful techniques and/or procedures and how to apply them to make your training and mission execution successful the first time you do it.
The focus of this issue is still on how best to do it right the first time, but the scope now encompasses the Army as an institution - as we hurtle toward FORCE XXI.
The U. S. Army War College Class of 1995 had eight officers who came directly from assignments as Senior Observer/Controllers (O/Cs) at the respective CTCs. This uniquely qualified group of senior officers formed a Study Group to examine training and warfighting issues emanating from their respective CTC experiences. In what they titled NOTES FROM THE BOX, these experienced leaders share their unique perspectives about how the Army trains for and conducts warfighting. We have reprinted several of these NOTES in Section I of this issue.
The thought-provoking, candid, hard-nosed, tell-it-like-it-is views expressed by these seasoned warriors will surely generate thought throughout our Army. That is why CALL obtained permission to reprint their work.
In Section II, the Study Group took topics relevant to the CTCs' evolving role as THE 21st CENTURY SCHOOL FOR THE APPLICATION OF MILITARY ART AND SCIENCE. The Study Group members interviewed the Commanding Generals and/or Commander of Operations Group (COG) from the respective CTCs to gain their insights. Then each Study Group member analyzed the topic based on the interviews, their own research and experience to provide both a current assessment and a projection about each topic's impact on the future of the CTCs and our rapidly evolving Army.
CALL is grateful to the U. S. Army War College for permission to reprint these articles. CALL only edited out any reference to specific units to comply with our strict non-attribution policy.
