FOREWORD
This newsletter describes logistics preparation of the battlefield as a systematic process for incorporating sustainment into tactical planning at the battalion task force level. Its aims are, first, to identify the types of battlefield data that typically affect the provisioning of support and, second, to show how pertinent data, when collected and analyzed, are integrated into task force planning. Integrating battlefield data that affect tactical logistics is essential if our doctrinal sustainment imperatives of anticipation, integration, continuity, responsiveness, and improvisation are to be achieved.
Recent trends at our combat training centers show that integrating sustainment into tactical planning continues to present a significant challenge to task forces. Prerequisite is the need to identify, collect, and analyze pertinent data that are useful as planning factors in preparing the battlefield logistically. Unfortunately, current doctrine does not describe how logistics preparation of the battlefield is accomplished.
This
newsletter provides helpful techniques and procedures on how battlefield data
are used to develop meaningful logistics estimates and to synchronize support
with maneuver. While the focus of this paper is primarily on battalion task
force planning, much of its information is applicable at other echelons. The
lessons show how pertinent battlefield data, diligently pursued and methodically
processed, facilitate our doctrinal sustainment imperatives. The matrices offer
training tools to help systematize the process of collecting, comparing and
integrating critical tactical logistics data in task force planning.WILLIAM
