FOREWORD
This newsletter provides lessons on Battlefield Logistics from Combat Training Centers (CTC's), Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM, major training exercises and historical events. The information presented primarily involves Forward Support Battalions (FSBs). However, these lessons apply to any logistics unit, divisional or nondivisional. The intended audience is logistics and maneuver commanders (Division Support command (DISCOM), brigade, battalion, and company). Lessons and techniques for staffs are presented.
When FSBs were formed, they solved an enormous problem for DISCOM and brigade commanders: command and control of the brigade's logistical tail. Previously, maneuver commanders wondered who they were going to the field with next, an more importantly, with whom they would go to war. A habitual relationship between the provider of combat service support (CSS) and the receiver ws established. It became possible to fix responsibility and provide continuity for support operations.
Operations
DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM validated the multi functional CSS concept.
Corps support battalions and groups (CSBs/CSGs) formed to provide mutifunctional
CSS. Together with the FSBs and the main support battalions (MSBs), these organizations
provided "one-stop shopping" for supported units.
Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM demonstrated some significant shortcomings in CSS doctrine, training, organization, material and leadership. This new letter will focus on how to maximize employment of the FSB and resolve these problems. Observers/controllers at the CTCs, TRADOC schools and Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM units have provided significant input.
