PREFACE
This narrative, in short-story format, surfaces potential and perhaps unanticipated problems which may be encountered when combat heavy forces task organize with light forces. The scene is a fictitious battle in Central Europe where the characters and battle action highlight problems and some solutions of fighting with both heavy and light forces.
The story begins with the light battalion arriving in the division rear area without augmentation, the worst case scenario. It focuses on the heavy brigade's staff planning process to move the battalion forward and assist them in their defensive preparation. The battle begins. The success of the heavy battalion's defense forces the enemy to attack the light infantry defensive positions. After a successful defense stops the enemy's attack, the brigade consolidates and reorganizes preparing the counterattack. The counterattack regains initial positions and sets the stage for a division counterattack ending the brigade battle. The paper concludes with a summary by theBrigade Commander of the lessons he learned during the fight.
I
hope this article generates interest and professional discussion among the
officers, NCOs and soldiers who read it.The lessons portrayed in "The Stone
Forest" are only the tip of the Heavy/Light operational iceberg. Use this story
as aspringboard to develop, within your unit, a better appreciation of Heavy/Light
or Light/Heavy employment concepts.
