CONCLUSION

Reserve Component units are challenged to plan and prepare deployment missions in the limited time available to them. Currently, most IDT and AT time is consumed by FORSCOM/ARNG mandated training requirements. RC commanders must carefully assess the training status of their units and integrate deployment planning and preparation with mandatory training.

Deployment planning is most effectively accomplished by a stabilized group of personnel, formed as a standing committee to monitor the ongoing deployment and training status of the unit. The planning group identifies critical tasks, sets milestones, and provides continuity of effort from the planning phase through the preparation and execution phases. RC units do not have the resources to conduct deployments by themselves and need assistance from their higher headquarters, State Area Command or Major U.S. Army Reserve Command.

Early notification of overseas deployment training is essential to allow maximum planning and preparation time. Active Component exercise planners must be attuned to RC time constraints, provide timely notification (with specific mission) and eliminate or delay conflicting requirements. ODT exercises provide excellent opportunities for RC units to train on mission essential tasks. The results of ODT enhance RC readiness and contribute to the warfighting capability of the Total Army.
