PREFACE

This newsletter provides an inactivation standing operating procedure (SOP), a brigade and battalion checklist, and E-date timelines for units that have been designated for inactivation. The information presented is primarily for brigade - through company- level commanders and staffs. However, the information also provides insights for external agencies such as installation Directorates of Logistics (DOLs), Directorates of Engineering and Housing (DEHs), and Directorates of Personnel and Community Activities (DPCAs).

As the Army builds down during the 1990s, many units will inactivate. Thorough planning and preparation are key elements to a systematic inactivation process. Written operations orders or letters of instruction and annexes serve to document and guide personnel through this process. This newsletter is intended to assist in these efforts. It will not answer all your questions or address all required actions. It does provide insights into thorough planning and preparation for an inactivation mission.

The inactivation SOP, brigade and battalion checklist, and E-date timelines were developed from units that have already completed inactivation. CALL requests that inactivating units send copies of their afteraction reports (AARs) to DCG-TNG, ATTN: ATZL-CTL, Sedgewick Ave, Bldg 286, Fort Leavenworth, KS 66027-7000. This will allow others to share in the experience.
