PREFACE
This bulletin presents insights, lessons learned, and emerging doctrine on battlefield deception. It is a joint effort between the Center for Army Lessons Learned and the Intelligence Center and School designed to stimulate thought and facilitate the use of new organizations and doctrine by the field. Deception is an integral part of operations on today's AirLand battlefield. The bulletin focuses on three aspects of deception: its conceptual framework; emerging doctrinal requirements, including tactics and techniques; and lessons learned on planning and coordination.
This bulletin is designed for use by corps and division commanders and staff officers as a precursor and complement to the new FM 90-2, Battlefield Deception (approved final draft, Dec 87). It focuses at corps and on tactical deception within the context of the operational level of war. Strategic deception influences enemy force structure for exploitation by operational commanders. Operational deception sets the terms of battle for tactical commanders.
Historical examples help us understand how to execute battlefield deception. This document draws on experiences of armies from World War II through the Vietnam War to recent conflicts which describe different deception techniques.
Comments concerning this bulletin should be addressed to: Commander, Combined Arms Training Activity, ATTN: ATZL-TAL, Fort Leavenworth, KS 66027-7000.
