TA. 3 AIR DEFENSE BOS
Positive Performance
3.1 Process Air Targets
* Early warning dissemination: There is good dissemination of early warning throughout the STINGER platoon; however, dissemination of and reaction to early warning at TF/squadron and company/team levels tend to be sporadic.
Needs Improvement
3.1 Process Air Targets
* Air defense units do not routinely use "states of alert" (SOAs):
PROBLEMS:
1. Units incorrectly use the air defense warning system to control the level of readiness of ADA fire units.
2. Either all ADA fire units are at the highest level of alert or they are at the lowest.
3. Individual fire units must specify their own readiness level during those periods when the level is not specified from higher. Too often the readiness level is too high for the situation. RESULT: fire units lower their readiness levels based on fatigue, not the air threat.
Procedure: develop a readiness status operating procedure that balances readiness requirements, based on IPB and the air defense warning system, and the requirements to conduct sustained operations.
* Bradley Stinger Fighting Vehicle (BSFV) Stinger team dismounts: BSFV squad leaders are failing to dismount the STINGER team in a timely manner, resulting in decreased air defense protection.
PROBLEMS:
1. Fear that STINGER squads will fall behind the maneuver force if they take the time to dismount STINGER teams.
2. Concern the STINGER team will be exposed to direct and indirect fire when dismounted.
3. A belief that the 25mm gun can provide effective air defense.
4. Defensive missions: failure to have STINGER teams prepare fighting positions; preferring to rely on the BSFV hull for protection.
RESULT: the subordination of the STINGER missile to the 25mm gun, with resultant diminished air defense protection.
