PREFACE

1. This is the second of two bulletins which focus on small unit, light infantry, combat experiences in WW II, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, the Falklands, Iran/Iraq and Afghanistan taken from books and articles about the conflicts. As with the first bulletin, this one contains lessons learned that are critical to light force operations.

2. This "Light Infantry in Action" bulletin differs slightly from the first in its greater emphasis on close combat and operations in urban terrain. In each combat study, the infantryman provides the key element in forging a successful combat team. However, these examples serve to remind us of the importance of combined arms operations in all kinds of terrain and situations.

3. We looked for significant events that were similar in at least two operations. We focused on the light infantry task force and below wherever possible. Many of the lessons learned, however, should apply equally well for other levels and types of forces.

4. Your comments concerning this document or any other CALL products will be greatly appreciated. Your comments should be addressed to: Commander, Combined Arms Training Activity, ATTN: ATZL-TAL, Fort Leavenworth, KS 66027-7000
