The targeting process is a tool for focusing scarce combat power resources against enemy functions and capabilities that will provide the greatest return and defeat the enemy. The process begins with the first warning order from higher headquarters and continues throughout combat operations. This process allows the commander and his staff to anticipate the enemy's intent, capabilities, and options; thus, the combat team is able to focus combat power against critical enemy capabilities to set the conditions for success.
Leaders often have difficulty integrating the targeting process into the military decision-making process (MDMP) and conducting targeting meetings that fully integrate and synchronize representatives from all battlefield operating systems (BOS). The purpose of this newsletter is to share tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) for targeting that were refined and successfully used by the staff of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team (RAKKASANS), 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), during a rotation at the Joint Readiness Training Center. The newsletter contains information on how to integrate the targeting process into the MDMP, how to conduct daily targeting meetings, and tools for organizing and synchronizing targeting data.
