Battalion Commander: Keys to Success . . . A Way

"Don't be afraid to challenge the pros, even in their own backyard." -- GEN (Ret) Colin Powell

Combat Training Centers (CTC) are great places to train units in preparation for all contingency operations. The Forward Support Battalion (FSB) Observer/Controller Team focuses are on doctrinal tactics, techniques, and procedures to assist commanders in accomplishing their training objectives.

Over the years, several lessons learned relative to Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures were captured in CALL newsletters by CMTC. All of these lessons learned drive changes in the way we do our business, help strengthen our doctrine, and, if used correctly, will simplify the execution of Combat Service Support (CSS) operations.

Usually, a few officers and NCOs will take time out of their busy schedule to read these newsletters prior to the rotation and are very successful. That's great! However, we ask you to help by getting these ideas out to your subordinates. Include some of these ideas in your home-station training plan and involve soldiers at all levels in the learning process. Take advantage of every opportunity to learn, grow and maximize your unit's effectiveness while you train. Training successfully to standard at home station before deploying to a CTC and implementing lessons learned help prepare your unit for any contingency operation.

Feedback is important. If you have something that works, please disseminate it for all to use -- if needed, let's change doctrine.

"TRAIN TO WIN."
