RECEIPT OF MISSION TIPS FOR THE COMMANDER

  • During initial guidance, tell the task force (TF) staff what you expect from them.

  • Project your voice so that everyone can hear you.

  • Ensure that your staff and commanders also project their voices.

  • During briefings and huddles sit close to the map where you can see and study it.

  • During briefings and huddles, when standing or sitting, face your staff and commanders for good eye-to- eye contact.

  • During briefings avoid sidebar conversations and whispering.

  • Ensure the staff knows the information products needed for decision making/battle-tracking.

  • Hold briefings to a minimum. Avoid "dog and pony shows." Set a time limit.

  • Support the XO's time schedule.

  • Ensure that techniques and procedures for the Military Decision-Making Process (MDMP) are well established and understood by all. Use your standing operating procedures (SOP).

  • Make your participation in the MDMP a high priority. After all, it is going to be your plan, so take ownership early.
