COMMANDER PLANNINGDuties
and Responsibilities- Read
and analyze the higher headquarter's base operations order (OPORD) for specified,
implied, and essential tasks.
- Give
a confirmation brief to the next higher commander on your understanding of
his intent and of your mission.
- Give
initial guidance to the staff.
- Plan
and conduct a leader's reconnaissance.
- Conduct
commander's estimate during mission analysis.
- Prepare
written commander's guidance and intent (using a format).
- Receive
mission analysis briefing from the staff.
- Verbally
give commander's guidance to the staff. Provide a written copy of guidance
for the staff to follow. (Ensure a copy of the commander's guidance goes out
with WARNO No. 2 to subordinate commanders.)
- Participate
in course of action (COA) development with the S3.
- Participate
in COA analysis (wargaming) to visualize synchronization.
- Read
and approve WARNO No. 3.
- Backbrief
the next higher commander on your concept of the operation.
- During
the OPORD, personally brief your intent and concept of the operation.
- Personally
develop the Commander's Critical Information Requirements (CCIR) based on your
decision support template or matrix.
- Establish
and enforce a battle rhythm.
- Include
battlefield circulation in your battle rhythm.
- Know
what you want in TAC configuration; practice setting it up, operating, and
moving it.
- Know
what you want for battle-tracking charts.
- Be
familiar with the brigade planning SOP and tactical SOP. Stress its use at
all times.
- Receive
confirmation and backbriefs from battalion commanders and the heavy team commander.
- Ensure
the XO or S3 take confirmation and backbriefs from separate company commanders.
- Have
a basic civil military operations concept for the brigade.
- Ensure
the staff and commanders do a combined arms rehearsal, R& rehearsal, fire support
rehearsal, and a CSS/CHS rehearsal.
- Determine
what type orders you will use (five paragraph or matrix). Require annexes to
be short.
- As
part of battle rhythm, have a recorder with you at all times to relay information
back to the command post (CP).
- Understand
aviation battalion fighter management.
- Know
how to write a task and purpose.
