3. MISSION AND TASKS

A. MISSION. TO LAND THE SURFACE ASSAULT ELEMENTS OF THE

LANDING FORCE AND THEIR EQUIPMENT IN A SINGLE-LIFT FROM ASSAULT

SHIPPING DURING AMPHIBIOUS OPERATIONS TO INLAND OBJECTIVES. TO

CONDUCT MECHANIZED OPERATIONS AND RELATED COMBAT SUPPORT IN

SUBSEQUENT OPERATIONS ASHORE.

B. TASKS

(1) TRANSPORT ASSAULT ELEMENTS OF THE LANDING FORCE

DURING THE SHIP-TO-SHORE MOVEMENT.

(2) TRANSPORT SELECTED EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES OF THE

LANDING FORCE DURING SHIP-TO-SHORE MOVEMENT.

(3) PROVIDE LIFT FOR ASSAULT ELEMENTS, SELECTED EQUIPMENT,

AND SUPPLIES IN MECHANIZED OR OTHER COMBAT SUPPORT OPERATIONS

DURING SUBSEQUENT OPERATIONS ASHORE.

(4) TRANSPORT ASSAULT ELEMENTS, EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES

DURING MECHANIZED, OR OTHER COMBAT SUPPORT OPERATIONS, DURING

SUBSEQUENT OPERATIONS ASHORE.

(5) PROVIDE LIFT FOR LOGISTICS REQUIREMENTS DURING

SUBSEQUENT OPERATIONS ASHORE; FORWARD OF THE FORWARD EDGE OF THE

BATTLE AREA.

(6) PARTICIPATE IN THE PLANNING AND COORDINATION OF

MECHANIZED OPERATIONS, LINK-UP OPERATIONS, RIVERINE AND LANDING

OPERATIONS.

(7) PROVIDE DIRECT AND INDIRECT FIRE SUPPORT, AS REQUIRED,

WITHIN THE CAPABILITY OF ORGANIC WEAPONS SYSTEMS, DURING

AMPHIBIOUS OPERATIONS ASHORE.

(8) TRANSPORT OTHER SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT, AS REQUIRED BY

ASSAULT UNITS DURING SHIP-TO-SHORE MOVEMENT.

(9) EXECUTE THOSE MISSIONS ASSOCIATED WITH ASSAULT AMPHIBIAN

VEHICLE (AAV) SPECIAL MISSION KITS.

4. CONCEPT OF ORGANIZATION

A. ORGANIZATION. THE COMPANY CONSISTS OF A COMPANY

HEADQUARTERS AND THREE ASSAULT AMPHIBIAN PLATOONS. THE COMPANY

HEADQUARTERS CONTAINS THE HEADQUARTERS, COMMUNICATIONS,

MAINTENANCE, AND GENERAL SUPPORT SECTIONS. EACH ASSAULT

AMPHIBIAN PLATOON CONTAINS A PLATOON HEADQUARTERS AND FOUR

ASSAULT AMPHIBIAN SECTIONS OF THREE AAVS EACH.

B. COMMAND AND CONTROL

(1) COMMAND AND STAFF FUNCTIONS ARE EXERCISED THROUGH A

COMMAND GROUP IN THE COMPANY HEADQUARTERS AND THE THREE PLATOON

COMMANDERS. THE COMMAND GROUP PERFORMS THE COMMAND AND STAFF

NECESSARY FOR PLANNING, DIRECTION, AND SUPERVISION IN THE

EXECUTION OF ASSIGNED MISSIONS. THE COMMAND AND STAFF IS SUCH

AS TO PERMIT THE COMPANY TO FUNCTION AS PART OF THE BATTALION;

OR AS A COMPANY IN SUPPORT OF, OR ATTACHED TO AN INFANTRY UNIT.

(2) INTELLIGENCE. THERE IS NO ORGANIC SPECIALIZED

RECONNAISSANCE OR SURVEILLANCE CAPABILITY WITHIN THE COMPANY.

THE COMPANY COLLECTS INFORMATION BY DIRECT OBSERVATION AND

UNCOVERING ENEMY PERSONNEL AND MATERIAL. PROCESSING IS LIMITED

TO EXPEDITING THE TRANSMISSION OF INFORMATION TO HIGHER

HEADQUARTERS.

C. FIREPOWER. THE MAIN FIREPOWER OF THE COMPANY IS PROVIDED

BY WEAPONS MOUNTED ON EACH AAV. IN ADDITION, INDIVIDUAL WEAPONS,

AND OTHER LIGHT INFANTRY WEAPONS ARE PROVIDED FOR SECURITY AND

LOCAL POSITION DEFENSE.

D. MOBILITY. AAVS PROVIDE TACTICAL MOBILITY FOR SUPPORTED

UNITS, EQUIPMENT, WEAPONS, AND LIMITED AMOUNTS OF SUPPLIES. THE

TACTICAL ADVANTAGES TO UNINTERRUPTED MOVEMENT TO AND ACROSS THE

BEACH; COUPLED WITH THEIR INLAND OPERATIONAL CAPABILITIES, ARE

SUPERIOR TO LANDING CRAFT. THE COMPANY IS TRANSPORTABLE BY

RAIL, SEA AND AIR.

E. LOGISTICS. THE COMPANY LOGISTICS ORGANIZATION IS BASED

ON UNIT DISTRIBUTION OF SUPPLIES, NORMAL SUPPLY PROCEDURES, AND

LIMITED ORGANIZATIONAL MAINTENANCE. THE COMPANY IS ORGANIZED TO

HANDLE THE INTERNAL DISTRIBUTION OF SUPPLIES AND CARRY A BASIC

LOAD. ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES, MAINTENANCE MEDICAL SUPPORT, AND

TRANSPORTATION ARE PROVIDED BY THE BATTALION.

F. COMMUNICATION

(1) THE PRIMARY METHOD OF COMMUNICATION IS BY RADIO.

ALTERNATE RADIOS ARE PROVIDED TO ESTABLISH EFFECTIVE

COMMUNICATIONS WITH SUPPORTED COMMANDERS AT EACH ECHELON,

SUPPORTING ARMS, AND SUBORDINATE UNITS TO INCLUDE INDIVIDUAL

VEHICLES. THE LATTER CAPABILITY CAN PROVIDE COMMANDERS OF

SUPPORTED UNITS, WITH AN EMERGENCY METHOD OF COMMUNICATION WITH

SUBORDINATE COMMANDERS.

(2) WHEN AN INFANTRY UNIT IS OPERATING IN A COMMAND VEHICLE,

THEY CAN EMPLOY THE RADIOS CONTAINED THEREIN TO ENTER THE NETS

NORMAL TO THEIR OPERATION.

(3) ALTERNATE MEANS OF COMMUNICATIONS ARE BY WIRE,

MESSENGER, AND VISUAL DEVICES.

5. CONCEPT OF EMPLOYMENT

A. COMPANY ORGANIZATION FOR COMBAT. THE ASSAULT AMPHIBIAN

COMPANY IS A COMPACT ORGANIZATION CAPABLE OF DEPLOYMENT, REMOVED

FROM THE BATTALION, FOR LIMITED PERIODS OF TIME. USUALLY THE

COMPANY WILL BE ATTACHED TO, OR PLACED IN SUPPORT OF, A MARINE

EXPEDITIONARY UNIT (MEU) OR SOME LARGER MARINE AIR-GROUND TASK

FORCE (MAGTF). THE PRIME CONSIDERATION IN SELECTING THE METHOD

OF ORGANIZATION IS THE ABILITY OF THE PARENT ORGANIZATION TO

PROVIDE LOGISTICAL SUPPORT. THE SERVICE AND SUPPORT RENDERED,

OTHER THAN THE LOGISTICAL SUPPORT REQUIRED BY THE COMPANY, WILL

BE THE SAME IN EITHER CASE, WHETHER THE COMPANY IS ATTACHED OR

PLACED IN SUPPORT OF THE MEU OR MAGTF.

B. PLATOON ORGANIZATION FOR COMBAT. THE ASSAULT AMPHIBIAN

PLATOON, THE BASIC UNIT OF THE BATTALION, PROVIDES THE LIFT

CAPABILITY DURING THE AMPHIBIOUS ASSAULT AND OPERATIONS ASHORE.

EACH COMPANY IS ORGANIZED WITH 3 PLATOONS OF 12 AAVS EACH AND A

GENERAL SUPPORT SECTION OF 4 AAVS. EACH VEHICLE HAS A RATED

CAPACITY OF 18 COMBAT LOADED MARINES. A SPECIAL TASK

ORGANIZATION, THE BOAT TEAM IS ORGANIZED AROUND THE INFANTRY

SQUAD OR SECTIONS AND IS EMBARKED IN EACH VEHICLE.

C. COMMAND VEHICLES. AN ASSAULT AMPHIBIAN COMPANY

HAS TWO AAVC COMMAND VEHICLES. THE COMMAND VEHICLE, WITH THE

INCREASED RADIO COMMUNICATIONS CAPABILITY, PROVIDES AN OPTIMAL

MEANS OF CONTROLLING SUPPORTING ARMS, MANEUVER UNITS, AND OTHER

CRITICAL ELEMENTS DURING THE AMPHIBIOUS ASSAULT AND SUBSEQUENT

OPERATIONS ASHORE.

D. COMMAND RELATIONSHIPS. COMMANDERS OF SUPPORTED UNITS

SHOULD CONSIDER THE SENIOR AAV COMMANDER TO BE A SPECIAL STAFF

OFFICER, AS AN ADDITIONAL DUTY. REGARDLESS OF ECHELON, THE AAV

COMMANDER WILL BE PREPARED TO EXECUTE THIS ADDITIONAL DUTY

E. LIAISON. COMMANDERS OF UNITS TO BE SUPPORTED WILL

INCLUDE COMMANDERS OF AAV UNITS IN INITIAL PLANNING CONFERENCE.

6. ADMINISTRATIVE CAPABILITIES. THE COMPANY IS CAPABLE OF

LIMITED SELF-ADMINISTRATION. ADDITIONAL CAPABILITY IS PROVIDED

BY THE BATTALION.

7. LOGISTIC CAPABILITIES

A. MAINTENANCE. CAPABLE OF LIMITED (3RD ECHELON)

MAINTENANCE ON ASSAULT AMPHIBIANS AND VERY HIGH FREQUENCY

EQUIPMENT AND ITS ASSOCIATED CABLING AND AUXILIARY AUDIO

EQUIPMENT TO THE BATTALION. CAPABLE OF ORGANIZATIONAL

MAINTENANCE (1ST AND 2ND ECHELON) ON ALL OTHER EQUIPMENT ORGANIC

TO THE COMPANY.

B. SUPPLY. MAINTAINS OPERATION/TRAINING REPAIR PARTS AND

SUPPLIES, AS DIRECTED; AND A 30 DAY SUPPLY OF MOUNT OUT REPAIR

PARTS WITHIN MAINTENANCE CAPABILITY.

C. TRANSPORTATION. MOTOR TRANSPORT ASSETS AND AAVS

TRANSPORT SUPPORTED UNITS, EQUIPMENT, WEAPONS, AND LIMITED

AMOUNTS OF SUPPLIES. HEAVY (LOGISTICS VEHICLE SYSTEM), MEDIUM

AND LIGHT VEHICLES, AUGMENTED BY AAVS, PROVIDE TRANSPORTATION

FOR ADMINISTRATIVE AND LOGISTIC FUNCTIONS. UNDER NORMAL CIRCUM-

STANCES, THE MOTOR TRANSPORT IS ADEQUATE FOR THE NEEDS OF THE

COMPANY.

D. GENERAL ENGINEERING. NONE.

E. HEALTH SERVICES. PROVIDED BY BATTALION.

F. SERVICES. NONE.

G. MESSING. CAPABLE OF PROVIDING A COMPANY DINING FACILITY

IN GARRISON AND IN THE FIELD.

8. SUPERSESSION. THIS TABLE OF ORGANIZATION SUPERSEDES TABLE

OF ORGANIZATION NUMBER 4652M OF 18 JUNE 1976 AND IS EFFECTIVE

UPON RECEIPT.
