National Security Strategy Report - Introduction

The National Security Strategy Report is a Congressionaly mandated document that should be a comprehensive statement articulating the worldwide interests, goals, and objectives of the United States that are vital to its security.

Title 50, Chapter 15, Section 404a of the US Code requires that the President submit a report on the national security strategy of the United States to Congress each year. This report is to be submitted at the same time that the budget for the next fiscal year is submitted and for a new President, the report should be submitted no later than 150 days after the President takes office in addition to the report that would be submitted later in the year along with the next budget.

The Goldwater-Nichols Defense Department Reorganization Act of 1986 is the legislation that altered the US Code to require NSSRs.

The report is also to spell out what is required to deter aggression and to implement the national security strategy.
