GLOSSARY
ACRONYMS AND ABBREVIATIONS
BAS battalion aid station.
B-LPS ballistic-laser protective spectacles.
- choroid
- highly vascularized layer of eyeball which lies between the retina and the sclera. Its main function is to support the biological needs of the retina.
cm centimeter.
- cornea
- The transparent cover over the iris and pupil of the eye which permits light to enter the eye.
CW continuous wave.
- dazzle
- A temporary loss of vision due to exposure to a bright light source. Vision returns to normal soon after the light source is turned off.
evac evacuate.
- flashblindness
- The temporary loss of vision due to exposure of the eyes to an intense light source, such as a laser beam. Reduction of vision may persist after the flash for several minutes, and is associated with the temporary depletion of visual pigment.
GaAlAs Gallium-Aluminum-Arsenide.
- glare
- The temporary loss of vision due to exposure to a bright light source. Vision returns to normal soon after the light source is turned off. There may be a transitory (1 to 2 second) after-imaging.
IR infrared.
IR-A near-infrared.
IR-B midrange-infrared.
IR-C far-infrared.
- irradiance
- The power per unit of energy produced by a laser transmitted to the surface of the skin, eye, or into the eye.
j joules.
- LASER/laser
- Light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.
- lens
- A transparent, biconvex, nearly spherical body in the eye which focuses light passing through the pupil (images) onto the retina.
METT- T Mission, enemy, terrain, troops, and time available.
mj millijoule.
MSMC main support medical company
nm nanometer (1 billionth of a meter).
PA physicians' assistant.
- retina
- The sensory lining (inner coat) of the eyeball which receives images that have been focused by the lens. Photoreceptor cells in the retina transform light energy into chemical energy. Nerves connected to the photoreceptor cells transmit information via the optic nerve to the brain.
RTD return to duty.
- sclera
- The tough white outer coat of the eyeball.
- scotoma
- Blind or dark spot in the visual field.
- subretinal hemorrhage
- A collection of blood between the retina and the choroid.
UV ultraviolet.
UV-A near-ultraviolet.
UV-C far-ultraviolet.
- vitreous hemorrhage
- A collection of blood within the vitreous humor.
- vitreous humor
- A jelly-like substance which fills the area of the eye between the lens and retina.
- watt
- The basic measurement of power, that is one ampere of current under one volt of pressure equals one watt.
