Rail Operations

HHC TRANSPORTATION RAILWAY BATTALION (TOE 55916L00)

MISSION AND ASSIGNMENT

C-E-1. To exercise command, control, and supervision over assigned and attached units and to operate and maintain railway facilities in a theater of operations. This unit, assigned to a TRANSCOM, may be further attached to a Headquarters, Headquarters Company transportation composite group.

CAPABILITIES

C-E-2. At level 1, this unit can do the following:

  • Provides command, staff planning, unit administration, control, and supervision of operations of all assigned and attached units.
  • Operates and maintains a railway division of approximately 90 to 150 miles (145 to 240 kilometers).
  • Dispatches all trains, supervises on-line operations, and operates railway stations and signal towers for which it has responsibility.
  • Maintains a consolidated property book for assigned units.

TRANSPORTATION RAILWAY ENGINEERING COMPANY (TOE 55918L00)

MISSION AND ASSIGNMENT

C-E-3. To maintain and repair railway track, bridges, buildings, and structures within a railway division. This unit is assigned to a TRANSCOM and to a HHC, Transportation Railway Battalion.

CAPABILITIES

C-E-4. At level 1, this unit provides:

  • Maintenance and repair of track, bridges, buildings, and structures of a railway division of approximately 90 to 150 miles (145 to 240 kilometers).
  • Vehicular maintenance for HHC, Transportation Railway Battalion and Transportation Train Operating Company.

TRANSPORTATION TRAIN OPERATING COMPANY (TOE 55927L000) (30 train crews) or (TOE 755927L200) (50 train crews)

MISSION AND ASSIGNMENT

C-E-5. To operate railway locomotives and trains. This unit is normally attached to a transportation railway battalion or may operate separately under the supervision of appropriate transportation element.

CAPABILITIES

C-E-6. At level 1, on a 24-hour basis, this unit:

  • Operates trains and locomotives in both yard and road service and performs incidental switching service for a railway division 90 to 150 miles (145 to 241 kilometers) long.
  • Performs switching and train build up in a large terminal including port clearance of up to a 20 mile (32 kilometers) radius from a large port.
  • Provides up to 50 train crews daily for road or terminal operations including switching, classifying, and making up trains for the road.

TRANSPORTATION RAILWAY EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE COMPANY (TOE 55919L000)

MISSION AND ASSIGNMENT

C-E-7. To inspect, service, and make running repairs to diesel-electric locomotives and rolling stock. This unit is normally attached to a transportation railway battalion. It may operate separately under supervision of appropriate transportation element.

CAPABILITIES

C-E-8. At level 1, this unit:

  • Services 40 diesel-electric locomotives and performs running inspections on 200 railway cars daily.
  • Makes running repairs on 40 diesel-electric locomotives and 800 railway cars annually.
  • Performs light repairs to tools and limited repairs to special mechanical equipment within the battalion.
  • Provides wreck train support to the battalion.
