Lesson 2 1. Name three common situations in which a soldier affects the environment. The following are some common situations in which a soldier affects the environment:
2. During vehicle maintenance what precautions can a soldier take to prevent or reduce pollution? During vehicle maintenance, fuels, oils, coolants, or other fluids may be spilled. Take simple precautions, such as placing drip pans, diapers, or absorbents under vehicles to prevent or reduce pollution. (para 2-3) 3. How can a soldier control maneuver damage? Risks can be reduced by conducting off-road driving only in authorized areas, crossing streams only at approved points, filling in fighting positions before leaving an area, and using camouflage netting instead of branches and shrubs. (para 2-9) 4. What effect does washing vehicles in unprotected waterways have on the natural environment? When soldiers wash equipment in a parking lot or a maintenance area, runoff enters storm drains and runs into streams and rivers, causing pollution. (para 2-10a(2))
