In response to recent actions taken by the US to eliminate "narco-terrorists" and designate Cartel de los Soles - a group the US claimed is led by Venezuela's president - as a terrorist organization, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Wednesday that China opposes any act that infringes upon the sovereignty and security of other countries, hoping the US will conduct normal law-enforcement and judicial cooperation through bilateral and multilateral legal frameworks and do more things that contribute to peace and stability in Latin America and the Caribbean.
US defense secretary Pete Hegseth has recently announced the launch of Southern Spear, a military operation to remove so-called "narco-terrorists" from its Hemisphere, as Washington's large-scale build-up of troops, warships and fighter jets continues in Latin America, media reported on November 14.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on November 16 that the US is set to designate Cartel de los Soles - a group that the US has claimed is headed by Venezuela's president - as a foreign terrorist organization, hours after the most advanced aircraft carrier in the US crossed into the Caribbean Sea, according to the US Navy.
On Monday, US President Donald Trump said he has not ruled out putting American forces on the ground in Venezuela, Reuters reported.
Commenting on US' recent moves, Mao said at Wednesday's press briefing that China firmly supports the 2014 Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace issued by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
"We oppose any act that violates the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and infringes upon the sovereignty and security of other countries, and we oppose external forces interfering in Venezuela's internal affairs under any pretext," Mao said.
"We hope the US will conduct normal law-enforcement and judicial cooperation through bilateral and multilateral legal frameworks and do more things that contribute to peace and stability in Latin America and the Caribbean," she noted.
