DFA thanks G7 for opposing force, coercion in South China Sea

MANILA -- The Philippine government, through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), thanked the Group of Seven (G7) for opposing the use of force and coercion in the South China Sea (SCS).

The DFA said in a statement Tuesday that the Philippines shares the G7's "serious concern over the use of dangerous maneuvers and water cannons, and efforts to restrict freedom of navigation and overflight through militarization and coercion, in the South China Sea."

"We appreciate the G7's call for security, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, including the South China Sea, and its reiteration of the significance of the 2016 Arbitral Award as a basis for the peaceful management and resolution of differences at sea," the DFA said.

In a joint statement on Nov. 12, the foreign ministers of the G7 countries (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States) and the European Union, again conveyed "serious concern" over the use of dangerous maneuvers and water cannons in the SCS.

They affirmed their support for the SCS award by the Arbitral Tribunal in 2016 and described it "binding upon the parties."

The G7, representing the world's leading industrialized democracies, is repeatedly advocating for a rules-based order in the disputed SCS, where Beijing lays a huge swath of claim.

In the past, top diplomats from the G7 have publicly supported Manila in calling out Beijing's use of water cannons and dangerous maneuvers against Philippine vessels in the West Philippine Sea. (PNA)
